Each year, the Council supports local revegetation efforts by providing thousands of native plant seedlings to Landcare groups and landowners, helping restore and protect our region’s biodiversity, soil, and water health.

Huon Valley Landcare Nursery
Launched in August 2023, the Huon Valley Landcare Nursery is a thriving, volunteer-run native plant nursery supplying approximately 4,000 native plants annually for revegetation projects across the Huon Valley.
A collaboration between Landcare Tasmania and the Huon Valley Council Natural Resource Management team, the nursery ensures a sustainable supply of locally sourced native plants. Volunteers are involved in every stage of the process—from seed collection and processing to sowing, propagation from cuttings, plant order dispatch, and direct support for revegetation projects.
Seeds and propagules are carefully collected from a range of sites across the Huon Valley, so that plants can be grown to match the provenance of each revegetation project. This approach ensures that plants are well-suited to the specific environmental conditions of each site and helps to preserve local genetic diversity by collecting from a broad range of sites.
Volunteers play a vital role in refining nursery operations, continually improving practices across all stages—from seed collection and cleaning to propagation and cuttings. Their efforts help secure a consistent supply of high-quality native plants, laying a strong foundation for future revegetation projects.
Requesting Native Plants
Native plants are provided free of cost each year to Huon Valley community groups and landowners for suitable revegetation projects that deliver environmental or community benefits.
Applications are assessed in spring, with plants propagated for the following planting season (June–August).
