If your application is discretionary, it must be publicly advertised for 14 days to allow the community to review and provide feedback. This process ensures transparency and gives the public an opportunity to raise concerns or support the proposal.
How public notification works
- A notice is placed on the property, visible from the road, for the duration of the notification period.
- The application details are published on Council’s website under Advertised Applications.
- A notice is placed in the local newspaper advising of the proposal.
- Adjoining property owners and occupiers are notified in writing.
During this period, anyone can submit a representation (formal comment) on the proposal, either in support or opposition.
Submitting a representation
A representation must:
- Be submitted in writing within the 14-day period.
- Include the submitter’s name and contact details.
- Clearly state the reasons for support or objection.
- Refer to relevant planning considerations, such as zoning, land use, or environmental impact.
Representations can be lodged:
- Online via Council’s website.
- By email to hvc@huonvalley.tas.gov.au.
- In person or by mail to Council’s Customer Service Centre.
Late representations cannot be considered, so it is important to submit comments before the deadline. For further information, please see Representations and Appeals.
What happens after public notification?
Once the notification period closes, Council will:
- Review all representations received.
- Consider whether changes to the proposal are necessary based on the feedback.
- Proceed to the final assessment and decision stage.
If three or more representations are received, the application must be assessed at a Council Meeting, where elected representatives will review the submissions and make a final decision.
Next steps
After public notification, the application moves to final assessment and decision-making, where Council officers or the Planning Authority determine the outcome based on the planning scheme and any public feedback received.
